Meditation Benefits
The benefits of meditation are numerous. It is one of the best practices that one can do on a daily basis.
Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of worldly turmoil. Meditation is the best way to enter a state of deep relaxation. Some of the benefits of meditation are:
- Stress Relief
Just by releasing the stress, meditation has positive effects on the mind, the body, our lives and the lives of the loved ones around us. It brings the state of inner balance and inner stability.
- Improved Health
Numerous studies have shown that meditation has health benefits. Many of these benefits are related to the decrease in stress that occurs through meditation. For example, with lower levels of stress and anxiety, the probability of heart disease diminishes significantly.
There is a growing awareness of the link between our state of mind and physical health. Quite often physical ailments are symptoms of inner turmoil. Meditation can give us peace of mind, and this can be a helpful step in avoiding many stress related ailments. Meditation has also been shown to relieve the pain associated with certain illnesses.
As stress is the number one cause for disease, releasing the stress on a regular basis improves the immune system, our overall health, our emotional health, and helps our bodies to become more resistant to illness.
- Improved Concentration
A healthy mind that has been cleared up from the cloudy filter of stress could perform times better. We tend to build up a lot of noise in our heads coming from worries, old traumas, fears, the news, things to do in our daily life. When all this noise is quieted down, our mind could perform in a much more concentrated and efficient way.
- Happiness and peace of mind
Our lives are supposed to be good. They are supposed to be enjoyable and full of appreciation for all the good things around. If we have no peace of mind and are constantly attacked by negative thoughts, happiness will remain elusive, no matter how successful we are on an outer plane. It is perhaps hard to imagine that happiness can occur from the simple act of being. However, if we can meditate with a still mind, we will discover an unexpected source of happiness within our own self. Meditation shows us that happiness is not dependent on outer circumstances, but on our inner attitude.
- Control of our own thoughts
As humans, we have not been given control over any of the circumstances and events around us. Even our super modern technology is helpless in the face of a hurricane, or an earthquake. Except for one thing – we can have a full and complete control over our minds.
Our thoughts have power.
Everything that has been created in the world around us, every technological success, every new invention, everything that makes our lives easier has started in the form of a thought.
Man can create nothing unless he conceives the idea first in the form of a thought. Man’s thought impulses begin to translate themselves immediately into their physical equivalent whether those thoughts are voluntary or not.
The direct effect of thoughts on our body, for example, could be witnessed when one thought could make the blood pressure go up, one thought can make the hands sweat, one single thought can drain a person of all their energy, or on the contrary – it can give them wings and power to accomplish the impossible.
- Spontaneity and Creativity
When we live in the thinking mind, we are usually preoccupied with the past or future. When we spend our energy on the past and present we cover up our natural spontaneity and creativity. We may feel we have neither creativity or spontaneity, but, if we can learn to silence the mind, we realise that we have far more potential than we currently believe. To access this source of inspiration we just need to quieten the mind. Some of the great thinkers and scientists were able to make important discoveries when they could absorb themselves in their work, to the exclusion of all else. Meditation helps us to live in the current moment, and thus can help us to unlock our creative potential.
